Find a Church by Thanksgiving

Finding a new church at college is a crucial step in connecting with a new community. If you grew up in a family that attended church, the process might be unfamiliar when you have to do it alone. Here’s a trick to help you find a new church by Thanksgiving – the perfect occasion to share the good news during a family turkey dinner.

First Week of College (or before): Gather some friends who are eager to join in the adventure and identify the five best local churches in the area. Seek advice from older students, college ministry leaders, or your pastor/youth leader. You can also explore online resources or take a drive to check out a few churches.

First Sunday in September: Visit the first church on your list of five. Attend a worship service, inquire about college ministries, and engage with others who are present.

Next Four Sundays: Repeat the process for the other four churches on your list. By the Second Sunday in October, narrow down your options to three churches and remove two from consideration. Don’t hesitate; this decision is crucial. Spend the next three weeks focusing on these top three choices.

Last Sunday in October: Further narrow down your list to two churches. Visit one of them and gather as much information as possible regarding your potential involvement.

First Sunday in November: Attend the other church on your final list of two. Afterward, seek guidance from God. Did you appreciate the teaching more at one? Do you know people who attend that you’d like to build relationships with? Which church offers more opportunities for you to connect and serve in the community?

Second Sunday in November: Congratulations, you’ve chosen a church. Attend and join. Invest in the community, even if you plan to be there only during your college semesters. Your involvement in one local church during your time at school will bless both you and others around you!
