MAKING THE TRANSITION (Part Four)

Now that we are in part four of this five-part series, I think that we have done the harder ones and this tip will be enjoyable and something that you can do for the remaining time you have at home this summer.

4. Learn The Practical Essentials– Living on your own is hard work. You have to be responsible for your time, money, and possessions, and you have to know how to do things that you might not have had to do before. For example, when I moved off to college, I had to learn how to wash my own clothes. I was not responsible for that at home and therefore had never done it before on my own. My wife, before going off to college, had never made a deposit at a bank, so she had to learn the process of filling out the deposit slip, knowing what to say to the teller, and making the deposit. It’s okay if you are not yet familiar with doing these types of things, but now is the time to learn. Ask your parents or another adult about what normal responsibilities you might need to learn before going to college, and then learn how to do them.
