If you’ve been researching Christian organizations on college campuses, you’ve probably come across the names BCM or BSM. Depending on the school, you might see one or the other—but don’t worry, they’re referring to the same type of ministry.
BCM stands for Baptist Collegiate Ministry (sometimes called Baptist Student Ministry). While every campus has its own personality, BCM exists to help college students build community, grow in their faith, develop as leaders, serve others, and stay connected to a local church. One important thing to know is that you do not have to be Baptist to get involved. Students from many different church backgrounds—and even students who are simply curious about Christianity—are welcome.
Many BCMs offer weekly worship gatherings, Bible studies, discipleship groups, leadership opportunities, mission trips, service projects, and fun social events. The goal isn’t just to give students something to do—it’s to help them build relationships that encourage them throughout their college years.
One of the biggest challenges of college is figuring out where you belong. The first few weeks can feel exciting, but they can also feel lonely. Having a group of people who know your name, encourage your faith, and invite you into community can make a huge difference.
As we’ve explored throughout this Campus Ministry Spotlight series, every ministry has a different style and emphasis. BCM is one more example of a community that exists to help students follow Jesus while making the most of their college experience.
