Throughout this summer, we’ve introduced you to several campus ministries that help students build community and grow in their faith. But there’s one more type of ministry that’s worth knowing about before you head to college: a church college ministry.
Unlike campus organizations that meet on your college campus, church college ministries are connected to a local church. While every church is different, many offer Bible studies, small groups, worship nights, social events, service opportunities, and gatherings designed specifically for college students.
So why choose a church ministry when there are already ministries on campus?
The answer is—you don’t necessarily have to choose.
One of the biggest benefits of getting connected to a local church is that you’re surrounded by people in every stage of life. Instead of only interacting with other college students, you’ll worship alongside families, young professionals, parents, grandparents, and mentors who can encourage you with wisdom and perspective.
At the same time, many churches also have thriving college ministries where you can build friendships with students who understand exactly what you’re experiencing. You get the best of both worlds: a church family that helps you grow across generations and a smaller community of peers who can encourage you through classes, finals, friendships, and everything else that comes with college life.
As you begin looking for community, don’t just search for a ministry—search for a church where you can grow, serve, be known, and continue following Jesus long after graduation.
