How to Actually Enjoy Senior Year
Senior year comes with a weird combination of things.
You’re supposed to enjoy your last year of high school, but you also have college applications, deadlines, scholarships, grades, sports, activities, and about 47 people asking what you’re doing next year.
It can start to feel like your entire senior year is one long preparation project.
So how do you actually enjoy it?
First, don’t let “what’s next” take over everything that’s happening right now.
Yes, you need to get your applications done. You need to pay attention to deadlines. You need to make decisions about college or whatever comes next.
But you also still have a life happening here.
Go to the game. Make plans with your friends. Go to the school event. Stay involved in something you actually enjoy. Take advantage of the things that are available to you now that probably won’t be available in the same way next year.
And be realistic about your time.
If you have three hours of homework, an application due tomorrow, and you’ve committed to five different activities this week, you probably don’t need another thing on your schedule. Senior year is a good time to learn how to prioritize—not just how to stay busy.
You also don’t need to turn every senior-year experience into a “last.”
Not everything needs to be meaningful. Sometimes you can just have fun with your friends without thinking about how you’ll remember it five years from now.
At the same time, don’t use “enjoying senior year” as an excuse to check out.
Senioritis is real, but so are your final grades. You’re still building habits that you’ll take with you after graduation. Learning how to finish something well—even when you’re ready to move on—is part of becoming more independent.
So this year, try to find the balance:
Prepare for what’s next without missing what’s happening now.
You don’t have to choose between taking your future seriously and enjoying your senior year.
You can do both.
And honestly, learning how to manage that balance is pretty good preparation for college, too.
