Start Exploring Your Passions Before College

Senior year is a whirlwind. Between football games, finals, and college visits, it’s easy to assume that picking a major is the first “adult” decision you have to make. But what if I told you that how you approach college—and your career—can start right now, before you even submit an application?

In yesterday’s podcast, Scott Carlson and Ned Laff shared that most students pick majors based on external pressures—what’s popular, what seems safe—rather than their own interests. The problem? Many college credits end up being electives anyway, so why not use them intentionally?

Here’s a simple strategy: start exploring your passions today. Take a research approach—ask questions, interview people in careers that intrigue you, and look for “wicked problems” that spark your curiosity. Wicked problems aren’t just problems—they’re challenges that require creative thinking, empathy, and persistence, and they can point you toward a vocation that fits who you are.

Proverbs 16:3 reminds us: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” By exploring early and aligning your interests with real-world problems, you’re laying a foundation that can make college—and your career—a meaningful adventure rather than a guessing game.
