If you’re a senior heading into college and thinking about studying business, there’s a good chance you’ve heard majors like marketing, finance, or entrepreneurship come up a lot.
But in Monday’s podcast episode, we sat down with CPA Jeff Windham to talk about a career path students don’t always think about right away: accounting.
And it turns out accounting might be one of the most practical business degrees you can get.
Jeff explained that accounting is essentially about understanding how businesses work financially—where money comes from, where it goes, and what the numbers reveal about a company’s health.
But the surprising part?
Accounting isn’t just about numbers.
To do it well, you actually have to understand the entire business.
How does the company make money?
What are their biggest expenses?
Where are they trying to grow?
Because of that, accounting students end up learning a little bit about every part of business, not just one narrow area.
That’s why Jeff shared something that stood out:
If someone wants a business degree that makes them highly marketable, accounting is one of the best options.
Many accounting majors graduate with job offers already lined up before their senior year of college even ends. And even if someone doesn’t stay in accounting long-term, the knowledge they gain helps them move into leadership roles in other parts of business later.
For seniors trying to figure out what to study, that’s worth paying attention to.
And there’s another piece of wisdom Jeff shared that applies no matter what major you choose.
Don’t just go to class to memorize information and pass tests.
Actually try to understand why things work the way they do.
Ask questions.
Stay curious.
Dig deeper than the assignment requires.
Because the students who learn how things work—not just how to pass the test—are the ones who walk into their careers prepared.
And as you step toward college, that mindset might be one of the most valuable things you carry with you.
