As you get ready for college, you may hear people say things like, “You’ll find your people” or “College is where you’ll make lifelong friends.”
While those things can be true, there’s an important part they often leave out:
Friendships usually start because someone showed up.
Many students arrive on campus expecting community to happen naturally. Sometimes it does. But more often, meaningful friendships begin when someone attends a club meeting, joins a small group, goes to an event, or simply introduces themselves to a new person.
The first few weeks of college are filled with opportunities. You may feel nervous walking into a meeting where you don’t know anyone. You may wonder if everyone else already has friends. The truth is, many students are thinking the exact same thing.
One of the best habits you can develop as a college student is simply showing up. Show up to the welcome event. Show up to the club meeting. Show up to the Bible study. Show up a second time even if the first time felt awkward.
Community rarely appears overnight, but it often grows through consistency.
As we continue our Campus Ministry Spotlight series, you’ll learn about different organizations and communities that exist on college campuses. No matter which group you choose to explore, remember this: sometimes the most important step is simply walking through the door.
